Trail Overview
Big Hollow Road is an out-and-back off-road trail that begins at the base of Prospect Mountain in Lake George. The route starts by passing through two tunnels beneath the Adirondack Northway (I-87). After emerging on the other side, a short stretch runs alongside the highway before the trail begins a steady ascent up the backside of the mountain. Along the way, you'll follow a scenic gorge, with a flowing stream and several small waterfalls providing a great backdrop. The trail is primarily composed of rocky terrain and is best suited for high-clearance 4x4 vehicles. While there are no overly technical sections, there is a stream crossing near the top that requires careful tire placement to navigate safely. Conditions near the summit can become muddy, particularly after heavy rainfall. At the top, you'll find a turnaround area that makes a perfect spot to stop for lunch or take in the surroundings. The return trip follows the same path down, offering another chance to enjoy the natural features along the way. Overall, the trail takes about an hour round trip, making it a great short outing for anyone exploring the Lake George area.
