Trail Overview

FS271 changes names at the south end of the trail from Long Canyon to Board Canyon. The route is decently maintained, however, does show signs of rutting some low-lying areas prone to wash after rains and potential shallow water crossings. The surface is primarily dirt with some rocky areas. The trail is wide enough for two vehicles with a couple of areas being slightly narrower. There are several areas for dispersed camping as well as a few spurs for motorized and hiking access. The trail connects from Jim Lewis Canyon and goes south connecting to Bluewater Canyon. A spur towards the southern end will take you to the Clarissa Lookout, which appears to be a hiking trail only. There is no cell coverage in this area. This area is prone to prescribed FS fuel burns, check for closures.
