Trail Overview

The Tobacco Mountains are a fun day of exploring lots of shorter side trails. The amount of time here really depends on how much exploring you want to do. There is nothing extremely difficult here from a trail perspective; in fact, this is a great area for the less experienced driver to get some wheel time. For the 50-inch crowd, there are lots of side trails to explore. There are open areas along the way with a wide variety of flowers and other vegetation. This would also be a good area to take a short hike if you want to get out and stretch your legs. Don't forget to bring plenty of water and snacks. If you have time, you can explore the Granite Creek Road and visit Virginia/Nevada City. This is a fun, relaxing day ride.

Difficulty

This is a Forest Service road that connects this area to Virginia and Nevada City, which are tourists areas. Early spring or late fall snows could make these challenging, so care should be taken during those periods. Most of these roads are easily traversed by most high-clearance vehicles. Some portions of the trail are more narrow, so wider vehicles may get some scratches from the adjacent brush and trees.

Access Description

This road can be accessed from either end. You can climb up the mountain on Granite Creek Road from Highway 287 approximately 3 miles southwest of Nevada City, Montana. There is limited places to trailhead from this end of the road. You can also access the trail from near McAllister going west on North Meadow Creek Road, approximately 3 miles until you reach the Forest Service property. There is a small trailhead parking area just as you enter Forest Service/BLM land. If you need more space, go on up the road and there is a camping area that is infrequently used. That that will work for the day.
