Trail Overview
Yates Lookout Tower Trail (NFS 9901) is an "off the beaten path" off-road trail. Located off Kings Highway, this route is easily accessible. The trail navigates you through some gorgeous Michigan forest as it eventually climbs a hill. There's nothing really technical here. This hill can be conquered in 2WD, but during unfavorable conditions, 4WD may be necessary. After you crest the hill, you'll descend the other side. At the bottom of the hill, you'll make a sharp left into a short and very tight section of trees before getting back out onto the main trail. Take your time through this tight section. Damage to a long-wheelbase vehicle can occur here. A short-wheelbase vehicle can navigate through here with no issue at all. Most of the trail is grassy due to the limited amount of traffic, with it switching to dirt near the lookout tower. After you return to the main trail, you'll make a turn onto NFS 9901 where you'll loop around at the old lookout tower site. There are still remnants of the Yates Lookout Tower with its concrete base foundation present today. One can only imagine the view from this spot soaring above this amazing forest. There are many other trails nearby to explore as well. Like most Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause mud/water holes that can get rutted out quickly. Most of this track is only wide enough for 1 vehicle. There are a few pull-off spots for passing, though. This is a trail that should be experienced at least once to take in its extraordinary beauty.
