Trail Overview
This trail runs northwest/southeast, mostly through state forest land. It largely consists of a two-track, though occasional rock/gravel and puddles will be encountered. The northern end of the trail is just to the south of the intersection between Middle Haze Road and Trail 48460. The northernmost 1/4-mile traverses posted private property; however, the rest of the way is through state land. Heading southeast, the trail is all downhill. It crosses woods and open fields. It will also cross two other trails (State Road and Fewins Road), so make sure to slow down as you approach both intersections to look for cross traffic. The southern end of the trail ends just yards from the Platte River. On the other bank is the fish hatchery. The riverbank is fairly overgrown, and there are not really any views of the river or ways to access it due to dense undergrowth.

Difficulty
Trail can generously accommodate a single vehicle, but isn't quite wide enough for two. After rain, there will be large puddles and mudholes. There are also sandy areas. I would not recommend using a two-wheel drive vehicle.
History
The name "steam hauler" refers to a device employed by the Desmond Chemical Company from approximately 1908 to 1920 to assist with harvesting wood out of the area to fuel its brick kilns near Honor, Michigan. The steam hauler pulled sleds on iced trails and used treads on its drive wheels with skis at its front - like a steam-powered snowmobile (see photo).
