Trail Overview

Silver Lake State Park ORV Area otherwise known as the Silver Lake Sand Dunes is a 450-acre off-road vehicle area located between Lake Michigan and Silver Lake. You'll find everything from flat sandy spaces to steep dune climbs, to water holes that can swallow most cars. There are requirements to enter the dunes. Please visit https://www.michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/orv-riding/silver-lake for more information. Once you're past the entrance gate, you'll enter the dunes from the entrance road. AIRING YOUR TIRES DOWN IS A MUST HERE ON THE SAND. Tire pressures will vary from vehicle to vehicle, but most are running 20 lbs. of PSI or less. After you make it up the entrance road, the landscape will open up to the vast area of the ORV park and Lake Michigan. It's a breathtaking view. From here, on your left to the south is the main directional dunes. The first dune is called "Test Hill". There are several hill climbs beyond here until you reach the exit road. There are vault toilets out in the dunes on the southwest corner. A lot of folks like to drive out towards the beach to do some swimming, sun tanning, or just hang out and have a picnic. Please use good judgement on the dunes and keep your head on a swivel. There are dirt bikes, sxs, Jeeps, full-size vehicles, and many other rigs all out using the same space. If everyone is cautious and rides responsibly, we can keep places like this open for generations to come! Keep in mind that conditions are dependent on recent weather. If the sand is wet, the dunes will respond differently than if it's been extremely dry and windy. The dunes can change daily and sometimes even hourly. We can't say this enough, use caution and good judgement so everyone can stay safe. There are boundary markers around the area where you can and can't drive. The south side of the dunes has the exit ramp back to the parking lot where there are restrooms, as well as the exit back towards town. Once you leave the exit ramp, the only way back in is through the entrance ramp. Again, please visit https://www.michigan.gov/dnr/things-to-do/orv-riding/silver-lake for more detailed information. The Silver Lake State Park ORV Area (Sand Dunes) is a very special place for all to enjoy!
