Trail Overview

If you're visiting Michigan's Upper Peninsula and looking for a true singletrack experience, the Moss Lake Motorcycle Trail is a must. Unlike many trails in the Lower Peninsula that have widened over time, Moss Lake remains tight, technical, and challenging -- exactly what seasoned riders are after. The trail is rugged and demanding, with a chunky surface made up of exposed roots and hard-packed dirt. Frequent elevation changes add to the physical challenge, keeping riders constantly engaged as the trail climbs and dips through the dense forest. You'll also encounter brief sandy sections that mix things up and test your traction. Tight tree gaps are common throughout, rewarding precision and punishing mistakes. It's not for the faint of heart, but if you're craving a raw, unfiltered ride through Michigan wilderness, Moss Lake delivers.

Difficulty

Moss Lake is a technical and demanding trail best suited for experienced riders. The path is narrow throughout, with very tight tree gaps -- hand guards are highly recommended to protect your hands and levers. In many sections, the trail runs along ridges or embankments, creating natural walls on one side and steep drop-offs on the other. Staying on the trail is crucial. You'll also encounter off-camber terrain in spots, where the trail tilts sideways on uneven ground. These areas, combined with some mild exposure, add a level of risk and require careful body positioning and throttle control. It's not a trail to take lightly, but it rewards skilled riders with a raw, immersive ride through dense Upper Peninsula wilderness.

Access Description

The trailhead is east of Federal Forest Highway 13. It is clearly marked at the intersection. Take the dirt road for about 1 mile, and take another right to get to the lot, again, it is clearly marked. There is no entrance to the trail from the trailhead, so you have to backtrack about 1/4 mile.
