Trail Overview

Maute Trail is an exciting 2.5-mile scenic bidirectional trail within the Waterloo State Recreation Area. Located near Highway 94 between Jackson and Ann Arbor, this trail is easily accessible. Starting from the south end off Morrisey Road, you'll start out on a dirt road that quickly turns into a dirt/gravel road. This is labeled as a Natural Beauty Road, so be ready for some gorgeous views. About halfway up the trail, before you make a sharp right turn, you will find a staging area for those looking to hop on any of the nearby equestrian trails. The Waterloo Pinckney hiking trail also kicks in and out along this trail. Please TREAD LIGHTLY so future generations can enjoy these public spaces. Like most of Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause unfavorable conditions on the trail, including downed trees, mud holes, and washouts. Come Prepared! This is not a very difficult trail at all, but it contains a lot of fun and beauty, and gives access to other great trails nearby. The north end of the trail finishes near Cedar Lake Road. Regardless of the conditions or length of this trail, it's a fantastic route to explore with a lot of fun to be had! As always, again, PLEASE TREAD LIGHTLY and be respectful of our public lands so future generations can have access to these trails!
