Trail Overview
Kelly Trail is everything you would think it is based on its name. This 2.7-mile bidirectional scenic trail has many things to offer. Located within the Pinckney State Rec Area between highway 96 and 94 near Hell, it's easily accessible. Starting from the southern end at the intersection of Patterson Lake Road, you'll start out on a dirt/gravel road in a lush tree area. You'll weave through the trees alongside the lush vegetation edging the trail and come across areas where it seems the University of Michigan is doing some Biological Research. Please be respectful of this area, as the signs alongside the fences say NO TRESPASSING. However, be sure to take it all in because it is surely one of a kind. As you progress down the trail, you'll venture around some side shoot water areas that give this track a fun side to it. There are a few lakes along this trail, also, so keep your eyes peeled. About three-quarters of the way down the trail, you will find the Pickney Rec Area north loop trailhead. You will also find that the Potawatomi hiking trail kicks in and out along this trail as well. Please TREAD LIGHTLY so future generations can enjoy these public spaces. Like most of Michigan trails, conditions are dependent on the weather. Recent rainfall can cause unfavorable conditions on the trail, including downed trees, mud holes, and washouts. Come Prepared! Most of this trail is wide enough for 2 vehicles, but there are limited places to pass. This is not a difficult trail by any means, but it contains a lot of fun and beauty, and gives access to other great trails nearby. The northern end of the trail finishes at M-36. Regardless of the conditions or length of this trail, it's an awesome route to check out! As always, PLEASE TREAD LIGHTLY and be respectful of our public lands so future generations can have access to these trails!
