Trail Overview

Federal Forest Service Road (FS) 3124, also known as Boreland Road, is a federally owned/ locally maintained, Level-2/ Level-3 forest road with a surface composition of dirt, gravel, sand, and native material. This route is currently open and in fair condition; it is not a DNR road (ORV use is subject to local government regulations). It connects Worth Road to FS 3455, FS 3124F, G to FS 3435- Goudreau Trail (aka ORV Route A) and Burma Grade (aka Nogi Road). Description created on September 17, 2025.

History

Brevoort Lake has a history deeply intertwined with early surveying, the lumber industry, and the development of recreational infrastructure by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s. The lake and surrounding community were named after Henry Brevoort, a government surveyor who mapped the area in 1839 (some sources say 1845). In 1873, a group of six settlers, led by teacher Amber Bettes, came from St. Ignace on snowshoes to select land, returning in the spring to establish homesteads. By 1875, the Mackinac Lumber Company established a storage depot, making it a key site for shipping lumber on the Great Lakes, causing the area to be known as "the Warehouse" in the 1880s, and it developed into a fishing village around 1884, with a post office established in 1890. Camp Round Lake: In 1935, CCC Camp Round Lake was established in what is now the Hiawatha National Forest. Campground Construction: Between 1935 and 1937, CCC enrollees built the initial Brevort Lake Campground, including log shelters, bathhouses, and a gravel road from U.S. 2. In 1937, the CCC constructed the Brevort Lake Dam to control the water levels of the 4,233-acre lake. The CCC also planted 15,000-20,000 acres of pine seedlings and improved fish habitats in the area. Today, the lake is part of the Hiawatha National Forest, featuring the Brevoort Lake Campground and a boat launch. The lake is renowned for being roughly 85% surrounded by federal land, keeping it largely undeveloped with significant sandy shorelines. In 1985, the Forest Service constructed a walleye spawning reef to enhance the existing fishing opportunities, which include perch, bass, and pike.
