History

Since its construction in 1935, Horse Mountain Lookout has served as a dedicated seasonal fire surveillance point, with access improving through road development in the 1960s. As of the early 1980s, it retained its importance as an active lookout site, supported by modern aerial patrols. Structure & Design: The Horse Mountain Fire Lookout features a classic L-4 cab perched atop a 30-foot wooden tower--a common Forest Service design from the 1930s. The cab includes large windows on all sides to provide unobstructed 360-degree views for early fire detection. The accompanying lookout cabin at the base served as living quarters for the fire observer during the summer season. This simple yet effective design was widely used across the U.S. for decades. Role in Idaho's Network of Lookouts: Horse Mountain was part of a broader network of fire lookouts established to protect Idaho's vast forest lands.
