Trail Overview

Crooked River or FS #233, better known as Buffalo Hump is a moderately traveled road which is part of the Nez Perce National Forest, but makes its way deep into the Gospel-Hump Wilderness as one of the only allowed motorized routes. The route is rocky, steep, and off-camber with ledges and water flowing under the surface in several areas. The route used to have washout diverters, but all have since failed. The route is primarily relinquished to ATV and SXS users, and full-size vehicles will struggle in places. There is encroaching deadfall and brush along the sides. The route goes through many privately owned parcels, be good stewards and leave no litter or cause to close access. Hump Lake is no longer publicly accessible and there is mining actively occurring near the lake. There are deer, elk, bear, and marmot in the area. The route terminates at Jumbo Camp where there are several dispersed campsites and an outhouse. Lightning storms along the ridge are prevalent, and there are several unmapped offshoot trails. Don't camp on private land.
