Trail Overview
The Blue Jay Mine Trail is a remote and challenging 4x4 route tucked into the Lemhi Range near Leadore, Idaho. This rugged shelf road climbs steeply from the valley floor and pushes into high alpine country, eventually topping out at more than 10,000 feet in elevation. The road is narrow, rocky, and often cut across loose shale, with steep drop-offs and large rocks that may make it unsuitable for stock vehicles or inexperienced drivers. High clearance, low range, and confident driving skills are a must. The trail winds through steep mountain terrain with dramatic views of the Lemhi Valley and surrounding peaks opening up as you climb. Expect slow, technical driving with plenty of rocks, off-camber sections, and sharp switchbacks. This route is best traveled in dry conditions during late summer, as snow and runoff can linger well into July. Remote and rarely traveled, this trail offers solitude, technical driving challenges, classic Idaho mountain scenery, and a true taste of Idaho's rugged backcountry. Carry recovery gear, extra water, and be prepared for rapidly changing weather in the high country.

History
Blue Jay Mine is so named due to the Azurite and Malachite deposits in the area. You can see, passing by the mine, the blue and greenish hue on much of the rock in the area.
