Trail Overview
This trail starts on Short Wash and takes you to a vista point called Vista del Malpais. Although not as dramatic as Fonts Point, it is a smaller yet beautiful viewpoint offering panoramic views of complex geological badlands formed over millions of years by sediment deposition and erosion. The trail cuts through a small sandy wash with mud hills surrounding it, creating an intimate canyon setting. You'll encounter some washboards along the way that will shake things up. The area is part of a vast desert landscape historically used by Native American tribes like the Cahuilla, Cupeno, and Kumeyaay, adding cultural significance to the journey. The viewpoint serves as a popular, rugged destination accessed via this 4x4 trail. This route is part of Anza Borrego State Park and is restricted to highway legal vehicles only. Please stay out of unmarked washes.

Difficulty
This is an easy-to-moderate trail with four wheel drive and good tires highly recommended for the sandy wash. The washboards add some bouncing but aren't technically difficult. Airing down is recommended for better traction in the sand. Highway legal vehicles only means street registered vehicles with adequate clearance. The mud hills create a scenic corridor but don't present obstacles.
