Trail Overview

This 6.2-mile-long ATV loop winds through a dry and sparse forest, on a wide path, with sharp corners through the trees. Lining the path are widely spaced pine and oak trees, plus manzanita bushes, sometimes with low-hanging branches. Most of the loop is pretty easy, fast, and flowy, but a few spots have more embedded rock and uneven surfaces, creating moderate drop-offs or stair steps. Some spots are heavily rutted with loose rock, and others are smooth sailing. The more challenging parts have more embedded rock surfaces on steeper slopes, making it more technical for less experienced riders. There are a couple of chunky ramped rock ledges, big root bands creating ledges and drop-offs, a couple of bridges, and some pretty narrow spots with a center rut that ATVs will have to straddle. Additionally, there's always potential for downed logs, but this loop is right near the Mace Mill Staging Area, so it gets higher use, and most logs have been cut. It's overall a pretty fast trail, with flowy fun corners, nice shade, and good visibility for oncoming traffic.

Access Description

The Rock Creek Trail System is located in the Eldorado National Forest near the town of Georgetown, California. Take Wentworth Springs Road east from the town of Georgetown, and follow the signs for either the Mace Mill Staging Area or the Bald Mountain Staging Area. Both are small and primitive staging areas with space for several vehicles to park and a small trailer turnaround. The third staging area, 5 Corners, is also small and primitive, located by either taking Rock Creek Road or FS 12N72 south of Wentworth Springs Road. The trails are open year-round, but close often during wet conditions, so it is advised to call the Georgetown Ranger District for the status of the trail system: (530) 334-6477. The trails are well-marked and highly maintained, ranging from easy to advanced.
