Shuteye Peak

First time on this trail, unloaded trailer at trailhead immediately off the paved road. Bone stock 2023 Can-Am Maverick X3, 72” wide. First segment is wide fire road, well maintained, accessible for most 2wd vehicles, maybe 5 miles long. Road narrows after that, becomes single vehicle wide, and progressively becomes rougher after that. Road becomes loose dirt before transitioning to large granite slabs, some loose rocks, and small step ups/ledges. Trail continues up to the fire lookout, encountered two groups of 5 sxs’s coming down. Ranger at tower mentioned that tower was closing for the season next week, minimal snow on the ground at the summit. Trail is rough on second half, two small stream crossings, only a handful of tight switchbacks that required backing to make the turn. Fun trail, lots of great photos, can see Shaver Lake, Bass Lake, Mammoth Mtn, and many other places from the top.

It has degraded a lot over the years creating a more challenging trail. It is very narrow on a lot of parts so three paint turns are necessary for most vehicles in certain locations in the trail. Lots of trees that have fallen that need to be avoided. Has a couple of side trails that are easier but have been run through so often by side by sides they are almost as hard as the challenging sections. Over all lots of fun, some minor scrapes in control arms with car in rock crown mode but over all a good experience. In some areas I would recommend airing down to 12 or 15 psi if running all terrains.

Fun trail, we made it to the lookout with no problems. I would rate this trail moderate, but it might be hard for someone with very little offroading experience.
