Trail Overview

4WD section starts at 8.1 miles from the Start of Central Camp Road. There are some off-camber areas and a little "crawling". Water crossings, steep switchbacks, moderate rock obstacles, and amazing views at the Shuteye Peak fire watchtower. In the Bass Lake Ranger District of the Sierra National Forest, Shuteye Peak overlooks from the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains to Kaiser Pass and Shaver Lake.

It has degraded a lot over the years creating a more challenging trail. It is very narrow on a lot of parts so three paint turns are necessary for most vehicles in certain locations in the trail. Lots of trees that have fallen that need to be avoided. Has a couple of side trails that are easier but have been run through so often by side by sides they are almost as hard as the challenging sections. Over all lots of fun, some minor scrapes in control arms with car in rock crown mode but over all a good experience. In some areas I would recommend airing down to 12 or 15 psi if running all terrains.

Fun trail, we made it to the lookout with no problems. I would rate this trail moderate, but it might be hard for someone with very little offroading experience.

Trail is fully open. Prior to the last gate, there are a lot of trees down in the Creek Fire burn scar. But the USFS and volunteers have done a good job opening the trail. The trail is more difficult than in years past. Make sure to stop in and say high to the lookout staff.

Logs obstructing the path just before the rocky ascension. Easy to maneuver on two wheels. Very bumpy ride up but doable
