Trail Overview
Riffel Canyon is a 1-mile point-to-point trail rated 10 of 10 located in the Soggy Dry Lake area in the Fry Mountains. This area is part of the overall Johnson Valley OHV area. There are several lesser-known but more difficult trails in this area. This trail is full of serious (and I mean serious) obstacles that will challenge even the most experienced drivers and rigs. The gatekeeper obstacle is enough to make many turn around and seek another trail. Large boulders and off-camber big climbs add to the trail. The premier obstacle on this trail is called "The Bear Cave." An off-camber turning climb with a hole large enough to lose the entire rig. Slipping off this wall means ending up upside down in the cave. Most vehicles will use a winch to make this climb, and I'm sure that some brave soul has made it without one, but at extreme risk. Those who built this trail will tell you that a winch is mandatory, so drivers, you have been warned. Although it says 3 hours to complete, expect first-timers on this trail to take significantly longer as the stop at each obstacle, crack, narrow gap and "The Bear Cave" to analyze and game their attempts. The 3 hours to complete time is based upon those that have experience on this trail. And just to make this trail more difficult, there are only two real options for exiting the mountain. Going up and over the mountain or going down the Crowbar trail. Going down Crowbar is the preferred route, but know that you are running the trail backward. Don't expect any cellphone service in the area. The nearest services are in Lucerne Valley and Apple Valley to the south and Barstow to the north.

Difficulty
This trail is only for Extreme riders and beyond. The average well-equipped trail rig may have great difficulty in completing this trail. Steps exceeding 60". Steep inclines and declines with off-camber sections are prevalent. Enhanced off-road equipment is required, including locking devices (front & rear), tall tires (37 inch plus), maximum ground clearance, tow hooks, and a winch. Minimum wheelbase 100". Excellent driving skills are required. Vehicle mechanical or body damage is likely. Rollover is very common. Spare parts and tools are recommended.
History
This trail was built by a group called "Men In Black" and was built in dedication to one of the local wheelers, Steve Riffel, who tragically lost his life in an off-road accident. Dedicated in 2006, this trail has become an annual event for several off-roading groups throughout the year.
