History
Discovery and the World War Boom - Wartime Demand: The need for tungsten, a mineral vital for durable steel alloys used in armor plating and projectiles, especially during wartime, was the primary driver for mining in the Tungsten Hills. Major Deposits: Deposits were discovered in the early 20th century, with some dating back to World War I. The Pine Creek Mine, opened in 1918, was a particularly large producer of tungsten and molybdenum. Mining Rush: The discovery of these deposits led to a rush of claims and activity in the area, with the formation of a significant community around Tungsten City to support the mining operations. Decline and Legacy - End of Operations: Tungsten mining in the area declined significantly after World War II, eventually ceasing by the late 1940s and early 2000s, with the last major mine closing in 2001. Economic Impact: The closing of the mines had a profound impact on the local economy, though the area has since found new value in tourism and recreation. Historical Trails: The old miner's roads and trails used for transporting equipment and supplies remain, now serving as popular routes for hikers, bikers, and off-highway vehicle enthusiasts.
