Old Kane Springs Road East - BLM 084

Trail Overview

This trail starts just off BLM 194 and ends at Highway 86. The surface is hard-packed and loose sand, lined with lots of creosote bushes, some of which are very large, creating an impressive vegetated corridor. The trail is smooth overall, but there are still some ruts, holes, and uneven sections to maneuver around scattered throughout. The route drops into a narrow wash with 5 to 6-foot walls where it zig zags for a short distance, then goes in and out of another wash for a fun change of pace. There are a lot of whoops on the east side of the trail that are not smooth and can damage your vehicle if hit at speed. Note that the north part of the trail is the boundary for the San Sebastian Wilderness Area, where no vehicles or camping are allowed, so stay on the designated route and respect this boundary.

Difficulty

This is an easy-to-moderate trail with the biggest challenges being the unexpected jerky holes that can catch you off guard and cause damage, and going in and out of the washes, which require careful approach angles. The lots of whoops on the east side that are not smooth are hazards that demand slower speeds to avoid vehicle damage. The narrow wash with 5 to 6 foot walls creates an enclosed environment, but the zig-zag section is manageable. High clearance is beneficial for the washes and holes. Respect the San Sebastian Wilderness Area boundary on the northern part.
