Monitor Pass - FS 313598

Trail Overview

This rugged and scenic trail begins just off Highway 89, roughly 8 miles from the junction with Highway 395. It can also be accessed via Two Road Road (FS31358D). The route starts gently, winding through open meadows with wide sight lines before gradually transitioning into a dense aspen forest. In the fall, the golden foliage makes this one of the more picturesque drives in the region. Several spur roads, including Two Road Road, provide options for deeper exploration. The trail eventually leads to a tight roundabout, which marks the turnaround point. Just beyond that, you can take a short hike to an incredible viewpoint overlooking Topaz Lake and the surrounding valleys -- a worthwhile reward after a steady, beautiful climb.

Difficulty

This trail earns a Difficulty Rating of 4 due to one particularly steep and technical section that requires high ground clearance and 4WD. The climb is rutted, deeply articulated, and often muddy after storms, making traction aids like lockers or at least traction control highly recommended. While much of the trail is manageable with care, certain sections, particularly through the aspen forest, are narrow and may be tight for wider vehicles. Soft mud holes can appear after rain, adding to the challenge. Although not the most extreme route, it demands driver attention, proper equipment, and preparation. It's best suited for experienced off-roaders with capable rigs and recovery gear on hand.
