Trail Overview
This 4-mile out-and-back climb begins at Antelope Bench near Highway 395 and winds its way up 779 feet to the summit of Lookout Mountain. The drive offers spectacular 360-degree views of the Eastern Sierra, including Deadman's Pass, Mammoth Mountain, Mount Ritter, Double Peak, Laurel Mountain, Red Slate Mountain, and Mount Wood. The trail surface is very sandy and dusty, making traction difficult in spots. Four-wheel drive is highly recommended, particularly in the steeper sections. The route cuts through tall pine forest, with beautiful scenery along the way, before breaking open to panoramic vistas at the summit. Shelf road dominates much of the trail, with narrow stretches only about one and a half vehicles wide. Drivers should also be prepared for a few sections of very deep ruts that require careful tire placement.
