Trail Overview

Global Rock (FS 5S004) is a delightful scenic cruiser that serves as a backstage pass to one of the Sierra National Forest's most photogenic oddities. The trail begins as a well-graded forest road, rolling smoothly through a towering canopy of red fir and Jeffrey pine. It's the kind of drive where you can roll the windows down and smell the warm pine resin. As you push deeper towards the Red Top area, the road narrows slightly into a cozy two-track, adding a bit of backcountry flavor without the stress of technical obstacles. The surface is predominantly soft soil and pine duff, though you will dance around a few smaller boulders embedded in the roadbed. The main event, of course, is the trail's namesake: Globe Rock. This massive granite sphere sits precariously balanced on a small pedestal, looking like a giant marble waiting for a nudge. The route concludes at the Chiquito Pass Trailhead, a popular jumping-off point for hikers heading into the Ansel Adams Wilderness.

Difficulty

This trail is a quintessential "Easy" rating, designed more for access than adrenaline. The majority of the route is wide, well-maintained dirt that can be navigated by almost any high-clearance vehicle, including 2WD trucks and stock SUVs. While the user noted some "smaller boulders," these are typically easily avoided or rolled over without needing 4-Low or specialized suspension. The road narrows slightly near the end, but the gradients are gentle, and the traction is consistent. It is a relaxing, bump-free connector suitable for families and novice off-roaders looking to see the sights.
