Trail Overview

This trail climbs over 900 feet and drops almost 800 feet across just under 6 miles, creating a challenging route with significant elevation changes throughout the journey. The track winds up and down hills along ridgelines and shelf roads, providing spectacular 360-degree views of the surrounding mountains and valleys that make this one of the more scenic drives in the area. The surface consists mostly of fine, dusty sand that creates excellent traction but can reduce visibility during dry conditions, especially given that this is one of the more heavily traveled trails in the region. The route features sections of deep ruts and off-camber angles that demand careful navigation and vehicle control, particularly when combined with the dusty conditions from frequent traffic. Four creek crossings within the first mile add water obstacles that can vary significantly based on seasonal conditions and recent weather. The trail incorporates switchbacks to manage the steep terrain changes and passes through a section of recent forest fire damage, providing a stark reminder of the area's natural fire cycles. Multiple opportunities exist for dispersed campsites throughout the route, making this popular for both day trips and overnight adventures. The trail culminates at the top of a bluff where a weather station marks the terminus, offering a unique destination with commanding views of the surrounding landscape.
