Trail Overview

Coffman Hollow (FS 2907) is a natural dirt, coarse gravel, and natural rock forest service road within the Potosi Unit of Mark Twain National Forest. Coffman Hollow heads west off the FS 2438, going along the raised ridge, slowly shedding off elevation downhill for the first mile, traversing small water collection holes, surface mud, over a natural dirt and coarse gravel path. The second half of the track begins cresting a small uphill climb, before droping into a small valley with a small water collection hole at its bottom, before climbing equally back uphill on the other side, then the road drops into the second deeper valley, featuring loose cobbles, mild erosion rutting, with an unlevel, subtle off-camber path with natural rock and flat slabs poking out at the surface. At this valley bottom, it crosses a water runoff crossing, being usually dry, yet shows the rocky erosion that the water has left behind, from rainy and wet conditions. The track climbs back uphill on the opposing side over more natural rocks poking at the surface, with more rutting and loose cobbles, curving around a large drop off into a valley to the north, before leveling out and meeting an opening at the top, here is the most reasonable place to turnaround and head back out the way entered, though the MVUM sanctioned road continues for another 550 feet west, where the legal ending is marked by a water collection hole along the ridge top.

Difficulty

The Coffman Hollow is given a base rating of 2/10, for having less than 12" deep water collection spots, generally flat natural rock, loose 6-10" cobbles, surface mud, and slight off-camber spots along the path, especially in the deeper valley of the further western portion of the track. It is also safe to expect all the gravel road complications, such as potholes, washboarding, and mounding of the gravel. Difficulty can increase in times of wet conditions, rainy seasons, and through a lack of maintenance or heavy use.
