Tips for Planning a Dirt Bike Trip

Before you get out there and get after it, there are a few things to keep in mind before you hit the trails. Review the difficulty of the trails you’ll be riding ahead of time, prepare your body and motorcycle with the right gear, and be sure to acquire any needed permits and brush up on the riding area regulations.

Trail Difficulty and Safety

Trails in each location can vary in degree of difficulty. From beginner-level single and two-tracks to mountain goat, lift-and-carry expert trails. Don’t ride singletrack alone. Ride with friends, preferably experienced ones who may know the trails. Be realistic, don’t tackle trails beyond your skill level, and remember that trail riding is supposed to be fun—not a competition.

Gear and Prep

Things can quickly go sideways when riding singletrack trails—from mechanical breakdowns and engine drown outs during water crossings to puncture wounds from fallen trees and bruises from impacts on the trail. It’s always a good idea to carry bike-specific tools and choose impact-resistant safety gear like chest/back protectors and plastic hand guards. Be sure at least one person in your riding party carries a GPS and emergency medical kit.

Permits and Regulations

Give yourself plenty of time to purchase any required permits or stickers for the designated riding area, brush up on the area rules and regulations, and be sure to have a spark arrester installed. Consider fresh muffler packing to limit sound emissions that can disrupt wildlife. Then get out there and enjoy the incredible opportunities to experience singletrack in the U.S.
