Trail Overview

Hog Canyon BLMHC7 is one half of Tom's Trail one of the most extreme trails in the network. The trail consists of sand track, steep slick rock climbs or descents and large waterfalls to negotiate. The Tom's Trail loop is comprised of BLMHC5 and BLMHC7. The trail is listed as the most difficult on the Utah Division of Parks and Recreation trail map. The Hog Canyon OHV Trail System is a network of technical motorized trails north of Kanab, UT offering OHV enthusiasts roughly 30 miles of trails through spectacular terrain ranging from easy sand to extreme rock crawling. The Hog Canyon OHV trails navigate steep inclines, rocky surfaces, narrow passages, and deep sand and are suitable for four-wheel-drive vehicles, ATVs, UTVs, dirt bikes, and other off-highway vehicles. They are not recommended for street or two-wheel-drive vehicles. Hiking, biking, and equestrian use of the trails is allowed, and motorized users should exercise situational awareness as users may not expect to encounter other user groups. The trail system is primarily accessed by trailheads located on its eastern and western entrances. The western trailhead includes a staging area and an informational kiosk. The eastern trailhead includes an informational kiosk but no other amenities. Riders arriving from the east generally stage vehicles at the Crocodile Staging Area.

Difficulty

Trails are difficult with considerable erosion damage, loose rocks, dirt, and slickrock. Water in excess of 12" is possible with mud conditions. Steps not exceeding 36". 4WD, tall tires (33" plus) with two traction-adding devices (lockers, limited slips) are required. A winch would be a plus. Enhanced suspension travel and good ground clearance are required. Excellent driving skills are recommended.

Tom's Canyon trail is running as a 6+ rated trail with several of the obstacles having deeper holes at their bases than a year ago. In our group, we did have a Wrangler Rubicon with a 2" lift and 35" tires make most obstacles just fine. I wouldn't recommend less lift or smaller tires than that for 4x4's as of this date.
