Real-Time Weather Info and Forecasts
When it comes to backcountry recreation, few factors play a larger role in planning and enjoying our trips than the weather. At one point or another, we’ve all found ourselves miles from the trailhead and soaked to the bone or shivering in our boots. These struggles are often preventable, and onX Backcountry’s Wind & Weather feature is designed to provide you with the information you need to plan accordingly and avoid the dangers that being caught unprepared can present.
What Is Wind & Weather?
Wind & Weather is our in-app solution to providing reliable, up-to-date weather information. We’ve tapped into Weather Underground’s network of 250,000 weather stations to ensure that you know you can count on the forecasts and current weather conditions you’ll find in the onX Backcountry App. With a single tap on your screen, you’ll see:
- Current conditions (temperature, precipitation, pressure, sunrise / sunset times, and more)
- A seven-day forecast
- An hourly forecast
With Wind & Weather, you don’t need to leave the App to get an accurate picture of the conditions you’ll encounter in the backcountry. This means no more switching between apps to plan your trip.
How Do I Use Wind & Weather?
You’ll see a green circle in the upper-right corner of your App screen displaying a temperature. When you tap on this circle, the weather conditions and forecast for your current location will be displayed. Swipe up on the Wind & Weather info card to see the entirety of available information. To access Wind & Weather in a different area, say the location of an upcoming trip, pan your map to that area and tap on the black oval displaying a temperature nearest to your location of interest. This will pull up Wind & Weather for that location. Again, swipe up on the Wind & Weather info card to view the entire forecast.
What Else Do I Need to Know?
Does Wind & Weather Work Offline?
Access to current weather conditions and up-to-date forecasts relies on a WiFi or cellular connection. Wind & Weather will not update when you are in Offline Mode or outside of WiFi or cell service range.
Can I Count on the Backcountry App’s Wind & Weather?
Yes. As a hiking GPS, we source our weather data from Weather Underground, one the most trusted organizations in the business, to ensure that our current conditions and weather forecasts are as accurate as possible.
