Trail Overview

From Provo Canyon the road to Hope Campground is paved. From Hope Campground to Rock Canyon campground the road is easy and relatively smooth dirt. Beyond Rock Canyon Campground the road becomes progressively more rocky and rutted until the final couple of miles where the road becomes easier. There are many amazing vistas and views. Also along this trail are many hiking, camping and picnicking opportunities. This road is closed from October to June.

Difficulty

This trail starts off paved and gets progressively more difficult including a potentially treacherous path along and eroding road. With snow pack it leaves little space to pass.

From South to North: Trail was open all the way through (there is a sign saying the trail was closed and unsafe for travel at Rock Canyon but all the gates were open). Very rutted in places and there are some areas where there are downed trees on the road. Air down to around 20 psi and jt was ok. The closer you got to Hope CG there are some big bumps right before it turns back to pavement.

Road is OPEN you can go all the way to hobble creek, just ignore the road closed sign, there are NO OBSTRUCTIONS in the road. My 89 cherokee and 2023 Tacoma went all the way from the paved overlook all the way to the summit, and down the hobble. the road is OPEN despite what the sign says

You can go pretty far in coming from Provo canyon and pass Buffalo Peak. There’s a couple of good small off-road trails at the campgrounds. I recommend bringing a high clearance 4x4 if you choose to do those side trails. There’s a point where it says the road is closed but I still saw vehicles come from that said closed roads
