The Big Horn River area regulates hunting opportunities for waterfowl in Wyoming and covers 12,307 square miles. Public lands comprise 8,680 square miles (71%) of the total land covered by this hunt area. The greater region is best serviced by Pahaska. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 3,700 feet to a high of 13,000 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 22,195 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. This area contains 25 campgrounds, and 1 public fishing access sites. There are 24 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Bighorn National Forest, Shoshone National Forest, Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, Cloud Peak Wilderness, North Absaroka Wilderness, Teton Wilderness, Washakie Wilderness. Additionally, 208 sites are open to the public for access to managed private lands.
