The 51 SUMPTER unit, wildlife management unit regulates hunting opportunities for wildlife in Oregon and covers 1,527 square miles. Public lands comprise 686 square miles (45%) of the total land covered by this wildlife management unit. The greater region is best serviced by Baker. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 2,200 feet to a high of 9,000 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 119 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. This area contains 60 campgrounds, and 1 public fishing access sites. There are 1 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Umatilla National Forest, Whitman National Forest, North Fork John Day Wilderness.
