District 317 regulates hunting opportunities for black bear in Montana and covers 5,456 square miles. Public lands comprise 2,603 square miles (48%) of the total land covered by this hunt district. The greater region is best serviced by Butte, Melrose, and Ramsay. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 4,100 feet to a high of 11,200 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 629 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. This area contains 28 campgrounds, and 30 public fishing access sites. There are 5 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Beaverhead National Forest, Deerlodge National Forest, Targhee National Forest, Axolotl Lakes Wilderness Study Area, Bell/Limekiln Canyons Wilderness Study Area, Blacktail Mountains Wilderness Study Area, Centennial Mountains Wilderness Study Area, East Fork Blacktail Deer Creek Wilderness Study Area, Hidden Pasture Creek Wilderness Study Area, Humbug Spires Wilderness Study Area, Red Rock Lakes Wilderness, Ruby Mountains Wilderness Study Area, Tobacco Root Tack-ons Wilderness Study Area. Additionally, 117 sites are open to the public for access to managed private lands.
