Public lands comprise 561 square miles (41%) of the total land covered by this game management unit. The greater region is best serviced by Lewiston, and Lapwai. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 800 feet to a high of 9,200 feet above sea level. Wildfires have burned nearly 1 acres here in the last two years, providing opportunities for new vegetation and attracting a variety of wildlife. This area contains 5 campgrounds, and 2 public fishing access sites. There are 17 trailheads that provide public gateways to these forested and wilderness areas: Nez Perce National Forest, Wallowa National Forest, Hells Canyon Wilderness, Snowhole Rapids Wilderness Study Area. Additionally, 7 sites are open to the public for access to managed private lands.
