Trail Overview
Crooked Canyon is a trail that can be approached from the north or south and overall is an easily completed trail by 4x4 and some AWD with appropriate ground clearance. Being primarily a single vehicle wide dirt trail, there are sections through low-lying washes that are primarily made up of rock gardens and some rock bed. There are no obstacles larger than 12" and only minor rutting in areas of the dirt track, however, this will change after rain as the rock beds are surrounded by soft dirt in areas that appear to be prone to water flow. There are multiple areas to disperse camp and several large wide open meadows. Being lower in elevation and with the orientation of the canyon trail, the wind through this area was minimal. Cell service is very weak in a few areas with the rest of the trail having no service. This is one of few areas in the Guadalupe range where it appears no cattle are present. The trail can be accessed from the north by taking Sargent Tank/FS517 to FS9515. Coming from the south the trail can be access from Segrest Draw/FS5501 to FS5501A. The makeup of the trails changing terrain is almost identical from both the north and south entrances switching from dirt to rock before becoming primarily dirt.
