Trail Overview

This trail is also know by a few different names: Pardoes 4WD Trail, Squaw Ridge, and Carson Emigrant Trail, but was officially renamed Hungalelti in 2018. It is a very scenic drive with great 360-degree views as you climb the ridge. The 2nd portion of the trail, if starting from Lower Bear River Reservoir, does get more technical with plenty of potential to get high-centered or stuck. Hungalelti West (16E26) comes to an end at an intersection with Mud Lake 4WD Trail. However, the Hungalelti trail does continue past this intersection as 17E24 and is a much more difficult and very technical trail as it winds up towards Melissa Coray Peak.

Difficulty

The first half of this trail is easy although too narrow for a full-size rig. About halfway through is a fun off-camber technical section that requires crawling over boulders and ledges while squeezing between trees. A lift and at least 33-inch tires will get you through it.

History

This route follows along the Carson Emigrant Trail. There are a few markers that tell the story of the early settlers along the way.

I came in through the lower bear reservoir entrance. All in all this was a great trail, VERY ROCKY for sure. Whether it be mainly small rocks throughout the trail or the larger boulder obstacles at about the half way point, there are TON's of rocks. the last section of the trail, I coincide with another review, lots of narrow passages and tight turns. taking mud lake back to 88 is a good way to make this trail a small day trip with time to go home and take care of other things. I believe it took us roughly 4 hours from lower bear river to mud lake route and finally back to 88.

The rating of 6 is a bit misleading because signal peak is rated at 6, this is a hard 6. Definitely more challenging than signal peak. Rear locker advised

The area had rain the day before and it made the trail almost perfect. Just enough water for dust control. A little dusty along Mud lake rd. Beautiful scenery. The view is spectacular. Met some cool people along the way as well.

First third of trail is very easy, loads of wildflowers right now, second third was rocky, not highly technical, but you may scratch yours skids a little. Third part a lot of narrow paths between trees, wide enough for my Bronco Raptor, but not by much! Exit at Mud Lake OHV trail for quick return to CA 88
