onX Opens Applications for Access and Stewardship Grants

Expanding and protecting open spaces for outdoor adventure

Missoula, Mont.–August 16, 2021

onX, a pioneer in outdoor digital navigation, today announced an Access and Stewardship Grant Program to help fund projects that promote public land access and stewardship across the country. Since 2018, onX has devoted a portion of its annual sales to improving access and recreation opportunities on public lands. This is the first time the company has formally opened its funding through an application process. Through the program, onX is committed to securing or improving access to 150,000 acres of land and restoring or building 150 miles of trails by 2023.

onX develops industry-leading apps that help outdoor explorers find great adventures, navigate in remote places, and get home safely. For their outdoor experiences, the majority of onX customers rely on access to public land, or publicly open private land. As a company that encourages exploration, onX recognizes its obligation to advocate for and protect these shared resources so that opportunities to experience nature exist for future generations.

“We’ve seen a huge increase in the popularity of outdoor recreation over the past year,” said onX Access Advocacy Manager, Lisa Nichols. “But at the same time, opportunities to access outdoor adventures are on the decline, threatened by the pace of land development. As a result, outdoor recreation opportunities are being fragmented, scaled down, and lost. Encouraging stewardship of and improving access to the land and resources that we do have is our top priority at onX.”

The company’s grant program is designed to fund projects that fall into two categories: access and stewardship. Access projects are those that purchase land for public access, secure public access routes, or establish private land access agreements or opportunities. Stewardship projects are those that rehabilitate or restore land where overuse or abuse are negatively impacting the area, or those that build sustainable trails.

The 2021 deadlines for grant funding are September 19 and November 19, 2021, and quarterly review periods will follow throughout 2022 and 2023.
