Description
The Washburn Family Forest Trail offers an immersive wilderness hike for outdoor enthusiasts looking to explore the pristine forests and scenic riverbanks of northern New Hampshire's Great North Woods. Spanning approximately 9.3 miles, this multi-loop trail system features a moderate cumulative elevation gain of around 1,170 feet, reaching its highest point at 1,780 feet. Starting from the main southwest parking area directly off US Route 3 (Daniel Webster Highway) in Pittsburg, the route winds through dense stands of mixed hardwood and softwoods, providing a peaceful escape. The trail network connects multiple access points, including the Bressette Road East Trailhead and a dedicated Connecticut River Streambank Access point, allowing hikers to customize their distance and experience. The terrain consists mostly of natural dirt paths, forest duff, and exposed roots, requiring sturdy footwear to navigate the occasional uneven ground. While the average slope is a gentle 3 degrees, certain segments present steeper climbs of up to 17.6 degrees, adding a rewarding challenge to the journey. Hikers will enjoy scenic glimpses of Ad Chase Brook and the serene waters of the Upper Connecticut River, which runs parallel to the northern portion of the loop. Managed by the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, the 2,100-acre property is open year-round for hiking, snowshoeing, and wildlife viewing, with no fees required for parking or trail access.
