There and Back
This route begins at the Lewis Pond Overlook Trailhead and climbs steadily through dense boreal forest to the summit of Gore Mountain. The route follows a clear path initially, gaining elevation quickly as it winds through spruce and fir stands typical of the Silvio O. Conte National Fish and Wildlife Refuge. About halfway up, the trail narrows and becomes steeper, with limited signage and fewer signs of regular use. Be prepared for sustained elevation gain and a remote setting—navigation tools like a map, compass, and GPS are strongly recommended.
As the trail ascends, hikers pass through rich wildlife habitat with chances to spot moose, black bear, or spruce grouse. Occasional openings in the forest offer glimpses of the surrounding ridgelines, and the final stretch emerges onto a rocky summit clearing with sweeping views across the Northeast Kingdom. Water sources along the trail are unreliable, and conditions can be muddy well into early summer. This route rewards strong hikers with solitude and a high-elevation perspective over one of Vermont’s most rugged corners.
