There and Back
This route begins at the Unknown Pond Trailhead off VT Route 114, just south of Norton Pond. The trail climbs steadily through a mix of hardwoods and spruce, with occasional stream crossings and muddy sections in the lower half. After a sustained uphill stretch, it passes an intersection with Middle Mountain Trail. Take a quick detour to scenic Unknown Pond, a tranquil alpine body of water nestled beneath forested slopes. This is a good spot to filter water or take a break before continuing the ascent.
From the pond, return to the intersection with Middle Mountain Trail and turn north, gaining elevation along a quiet and seldom-traveled ridgeline. The tread narrows as the trail climbs through mossy spruce stands and over rougher terrain. The summit of Middle Mountain is marked by subtle clearing and boulders, offering filtered views through the trees. Wildlife is common in this area—moose sightings are possible, especially near the pond. The return follows the same route, with steady downhill walking back to the trailhead. This is a rewarding option for hikers seeking solitude and classic day hikes in northern Vermont’s remote backcountry.
