The Bluff Mountain South Summit Loop begins from the Mountain Street trail access on the eastern edge of the Brighton Municipal Forest. From the trailhead, the route climbs steadily through mixed hardwood and conifer forest, following a clear tread with some rocky and root-filled stretches. At a Y-intersection partway up, bear right to begin the loop portion, ascending more steeply toward the South Summit. The upper trail includes sections of ledge and exposed rock—take caution if conditions are wet or icy. Near the summit, a short spur leads to a scenic overlook with wide views across Island Pond and the surrounding Nulhegan Basin.
The return follows the remainder of the loop before reconnecting with the approach trail. Along the way, hikers pass through habitat frequented by moose, black bears, and migratory songbirds, especially in wet forest zones. Primitive camping is permitted in accordance with local regulations, but water is scarce past the base; carry all needed supplies. This trail is best hiked from late spring through mid-fall, though snowshoeing may be possible in winter. The ridgeline vista and quiet woodland setting make this a rewarding half-day hike in northern Vermont.
