There and Back
The Mad Brook Trail begins at a small parking area on Mad Brook Road and steadily climbs through dense boreal forest toward the summit of Bald Mountain. The route follows a clearly defined path that gains elevation gradually but consistently, with stretches of uneven footing over rocks and roots. After a short distance, pass a junction where the trail briefly narrows before continuing uphill. About halfway up, the forest opens slightly, offering glimpses of the surrounding ridgelines. Seasonal streams may cross the trail here, though water is scarce later in the season.
As the trail nears the summit ridge, the grade steepens slightly before leveling out near the open summit area. The restored fire tower stands at the high point, offering panoramic views of the northern Green Mountains, White Mountains, and distant Canadian borderlands. Moose sightings are common in this area, especially in early morning or evening hours. Return by descending the same way. This is one of the best moderate day hikes in Willoughby State Forest for hikers seeking solitude, wildlife, and broad summit views.
