Description
The Mt. Pisgah North Trail begins at the signed trailhead just off VT Route 5A at the midpoint of Lake Willoughby. From the start, the trail climbs steadily through mixed hardwood forest, gaining elevation on a well-defined path. As the route ascends, the forest gradually shifts to spruce-fir, and the grade steepens with scattered rocky sections underfoot. Around halfway up, hikers reach a signed spur leading to the first of several dramatic cliffside viewpoints. Use caution near the edge, especially with children or dogs. Continue climbing to encounter two more signed outlooks along the ridgeline. Each offers sweeping views across the steep-sided Willoughby Gap, including Mount Hor to the west and the glacially carved cliffs dropping toward the lake far below. The trail ends at a broad, forested summit with limited views, though the earlier vistas are the main draw. Return the way you came. This is one of the best day hikes in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom for fall foliage, dramatic terrain, and glacial scenery.
