There and Back
The Mt. Hor Trail begins from the Mt. Pisgah South Trailhead on VT-5A, climbing steadily through a mixed hardwood forest within Willoughby State Forest. From the trailhead, follow a clear path as it gradually ascends westward, climbing away from the road and into thicker woods. After a short distance, the trail bends northwest and continues uphill, weaving through sugar maple, birch, and beech stands that offer striking fall color in autumn months. At higher elevation, the path narrows and becomes steeper with occasional exposed roots and slick rocks, especially when wet.
There are no major junctions to navigate along the way, and the route maintains a consistent uphill grade until it crests at the summit of Mt. Hor. From the top, open ledges offer sweeping views east across Lake Willoughby and into the surrounding ridges of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. Moose and peregrine falcons are occasionally spotted in this area, especially near dawn or dusk. On the return, hikers retrace the same trail back to the parking area. Though moderate overall, sections of this route demand careful footing in wet conditions.
