There and Back
The Herbert Hawkes Trail via CCC Road begins at the Mt. Pisgah South Trailhead on Route 5A and heads west through the forested slopes of Willoughby State Forest. Hikers follow the historic CCC Road uphill, passing through mixed hardwood stands before turning right onto the Herbert Hawkes Trail at a clearly signed junction. A short spur leads south to a panoramic overlook on Mount Hor, offering a commanding view of the southern end of Lake Willoughby. From the main trail, continue eastward to discover two more dramatic cliffside vistas. These viewpoints look east across the glacially carved valley, revealing the rugged Mount Pisgah ridgeline and the full expanse of Lake Willoughby.
The route travels over moderate terrain with some uneven footing and gradual elevation gain. It’s best tackled from late spring through fall, though patches of snow and wet trail conditions can linger into early summer. Be cautious near the cliff edges and watch for ticks and insects in the warmer months. The final viewpoint marks the turnaround point before retracing your steps. With its layered forest canopy and sweeping views, this route offers one of the most scenic day hikes in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom.
