Starting from the South Shore Trailhead near VT-5A, the Lake Willoughby Trail begins with a gradual climb through dense boreal forest. The trail leads to the base of the cliffs, offering a dramatic view of the lake. Birdwatchers may spot peregrine falcons nesting in the rocky outcrops. The return follows the South Beach Trail, which gradually winds downhill through mossy forest and leads back to the road near a public lake access area.
This moderate route showcases some of the best hiking terrain in Willoughby State Forest, with a mix of exposed cliffs, shaded woods, and water access. Though short in distance, the steep grade and slick rock can be challenging, particularly in wet conditions. The payoff comes in the form of unforgettable views and a cooling stop by Lake Willoughby at the route’s end.
