There and Back
The Wheeler Mountain Trail begins from the signed trailhead off Wheeler Mountain Road and climbs steadily through a dense northern hardwood forest. The route follows a well-marked path over roots and rocks before reaching steeper, exposed granite sections. Around halfway up, a short scramble over ledges opens up views to the south. Continue uphill to several broad outcrops near the summit, where hikers can enjoy sweeping vistas of Mount Pisgah, Mount Hor, and the length of Lake Willoughby.
Use caution on the upper ledges, especially when wet, as footing can be slick. The route returns the same way, descending through forested switchbacks. This moderate hike offers one of the best short day hikes in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, especially during peak fall foliage.
