Description
This traverse begins at Wheeler Pond Trailhead in Willoughby State Forest, climbing steadily through mixed hardwood forest on the Moose Mountain Trail. The route ascends rugged, moderately steep terrain to reach Moose Mountain’s open summit, where hikers are rewarded with expansive views of forested ridges and distant peaks. Continue along the ridgeline trail to the east, descending briefly before climbing again toward Mount Hor. The approach to Mount Hor involves moderate elevation gain and occasional rocky footing. Once above treeline, broad views open toward Lake Willoughby and the dramatic cliffs of Mount Pisgah across the valley. This route returns the same way, retracing your steps to Wheeler Pond. Seasonal streams may offer water along the Brookside and Moose Mountain Trails, but late summer conditions can be dry—plan accordingly. Wildlife sightings are common, especially moose and songbirds, and black bears inhabit the area year-round. This moderate-to-challenging route delivers a rewarding mix of ridgeline walking, quiet forest, and high-elevation views in Vermont’s scenic Northeast Kingdom.
