Description
This moderate route begins at the Haystack Mountain South Trailhead, climbing steadily through dense mixed hardwood forest. Early sections weave through maple and birch stands before reaching steeper terrain leading toward the summit. At a high saddle, continue north to reach the open summit of Haystack Mountain, where hikers are rewarded with wide-ranging views of the surrounding Green Mountains. After taking in the views, continue on, descending carefully on the same trail. Once back at the saddle, turn west and follow a connector trail to reach Long Pond Road. This stretch leads south through a peaceful wooded corridor, offering occasional glimpses of the pond. The road eventually curves back east, returning to the starting point. Wildlife sightings, including moose and black bears, are possible along this quiet return. This route offers a rewarding climb, scenic forest travel, and a mellow finish beside Long Pond.
