There and Back
This backcountry route begins on Stub Hill Road near Magalloway Road in Pittsburg, New Hampshire. From the roadside, follow an old forest road on a gradual but steady climb through dense evergreen forest. After a short distance, watch carefully for a break in the trees where an unmarked herd path leads left into the woods. This faint, unofficial trail winds uphill through wet and occasionally muddy terrain before reaching the pond. Good navigation and a keen eye are important here, as signage is nonexistent and the path may be overgrown or hard to follow in sections.
Stub Hill Pond sits just below the summit of Stub Hill in a quiet, high-elevation basin. Surrounded by thick spruce and fir forest, the shallow tarn offers a peaceful, off-the-beaten-path destination for those seeking solitude. On the return, retrace the same route and watch for mountain views along the descent.
