Trail Overview
FS 554D is the short loop trail that is used to access over a dozen dispersed camping sites. This trail begins and ends at its intersection with Forest Road 554. This two-track dirt trail navigates through a hilly section of forest surrounded by dispersed camping sites. The sites are large enough for one vehicle; some could fit two small vehicles. Most sites are cleared out and have a fire ring made of rocks. There is a large grassy clearing at the start of the trail which could be used for large groups or large vehicles that do not fit into the smaller sites within the forest. The trail's surface is hard-packed dirt; there are no large potholes or mud holes on this trail. The surrounding scenery is hilly forest surrounded by mature trees. Cell service in this area is generally acceptable, and traveling with downloaded maps is not required.
Difficulty
This is a gentle, rolling dirt two-track. Sightlines are good to great, with few or no obstacles on the trail. Being a forest road, there is always the potential for small branches to be on the trail or for washouts due to heavy rainfall.
