Trail Overview

Forest Service Road 2988A is a moderate, there-and-back style trail. This trail begins at its intersection with Forest Service Road 2260, Fish Hatchery Road. This trail is excellent for dispersed camping, as there are several clearings along the trail as it navigates to its endpoint, as well as a large area on the trail's northern end that could be used for camping. This trail is a moderate dirt road which is wider than most two-tracks in the area, but does not have enough room for two vehicles to comfortably pass each other at speed. There are several mud holes located throughout this trail, as well as several sections with small ruts. The surrounding terrain consists of moderately sized trees, as well as some small undergrowth, which can obstruct the view of the oncoming trail. Cell service in this area is very spotty and does not work for some carriers. It is best to always travel with downloaded maps. This area has a large snowmobile trail presence in the winter months. While there are some roads within the forest that do not have sled traffic, it is best to avoid them in the winter months as navigation can be challenging or not allowed.

Difficulty

This trail can be completed by all. The mud holes, as well as ruts, add a level of fun, along with very mild difficulty over some of the other trails in the area. Small trees and plants overhang the trail, so small scratches can be expected in the summer months as plants green up. This trail is unmaintained for the most part, so seeing a tree down or debris on the trail could be expected after severe weather.
